Extended day classes begin the third week of September and continue for the remainder of the school year.

Extended Day is held in our junior room. Children in the morning senior class are brought to the junior room following their regular programming at 11:20. Students in the afternoon senior class are brought to the junior room by a parent/guardian at 11:20, and are then brought over to the senior room at 12:25 to start their regular afternoon class. Extended Day starts with time devoted to gross motor activities. Weather permitting, the children spend time outdoors at the Irma Butler Tot Lot, located just outside the classrooms. During the winter, the children use the Community House gym, utilizing various gym materials, including parachutes, playground balls for dribbling, passing, catching, and shooting hoops, and balance beams.

Following time for gross motor activities, the children return to the room for a bathroom break, hand washing, and time to enjoy their lunch brought from home (Hinsdale Community Preschool is a peanut-free school, so all items in the children’s lunches should be peanut and peanut butter free). Once children are finished eating, they gather on the rug with one of the teachers for some “quiet time”, with stories, fingerplays, and flannel board stories.

For the rest of the time, the children can choose from a variety of activities. Each child has their own journal in which they can do a weekly story dictation. It is a wonderful literacy activity which allows the children to observe their ideas and words being valued and documented on their picture. In addition, it is a wonderful opportunity for parents to observe their child’s development throughout the course of the year. Children can also participate in a variety of sequencing, patterning, and matching activities with an assortment of manipulatives, floor puzzles, and games. During this time, the children can also work with a variety of sensory materials including play dough, flubber, or silly putty, as well as explore the various other materials in the room.

At the end of the day, the children are picked up by a parent/guardian in the classroom. The children and the day are celebrated as we end with our “superstar” song. Every child leaves school knowing that they are special, unique, and a true superstar!

Spaces are limited and Extended Day registration follows the priority registration guidelines as specified in our bi-laws. Registration is typically held in September; however, children may join at any time throughout the year if space is available. For children ready to spend additional time at school with their teachers and friends, this is a wonderful opportunity to build upon the skills learned and activities done during their regular programming. If you are currently enrolled in our Senior class and are interested in registering your child for extended day, please email or talk to the Registrar for space availability.
