Developing an Early Appreciation for a Second Language

For the 2008-2009 school year, Spanish Enrichment will be offered on:

Spanish Enrichment is designed to teach Spanish to children, ages 4, 5 and Kindergarteners, using the National and Illinois State Standards for Foreign Language Learning.  In this immersion style play based program, the children will learn Spanish words and phrases used throughout their class period.

Through the study of other languages, students gain a knowledge and understanding of communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and communities that use that language.  This class will increase the understanding of all of those through the following:

Communication:  The children will engage in conversation, express feelings and emotions as well as provide and obtain information in Spanish. The children will participate in calendar, weather and circle time activities all in Spanish.

Culture: The children will gain knowledge and understanding of other Spanish cultures through the exploration of holidays, history and customs of these cultures.

Connections:  The children will participate in songs, stories and finger plays in Spanish making connections with literature, music and other disciplines to acquire information.

Comparisons: The children will compare Spanish stories, songs and words to their own language.

Communities: The children will develop an awareness of how other children live in various Spanish communities.

Learning a second language at an early age leaves students with more flexibility in thinking; a greater sensitivity to language and a better ear for listening!
